Capital Region residents are wondering what, if any, supermarket chain might replace the five ShopRite stores that will soon be closing around the area in the coming weeks. News 10 looked into the rumor that Kroger may take over. Kroger operates around 2,700 stores across the US, but none in New York State.
However, some job postings have popped up on some sites indicating Kroger was looking to hire in Albany. News 10 reached out to the supermarket chain, a spokesperson said the job listings were a mistake and are, in fact, for positions in California - not New York. They are working on fixing the job posting.
It's long been rumored that Wegman's could move into the area. The Times Union looked into that possibility and that does not appear to be happening either:
We do not currently have any plans to enter the Albany market
So the speculation continues - maybe Trader Joe's or Wholefoods will expand their footprint in the market? Does Stop N Shop make its way into the area? Could it possibly be the return of Grand Union to the Capital Region?
