TikTok May Fully Shut Down Access in the U.S. if Ban Proceeds

The ban deadline is this Sunday, January 19

TikTok is reportedly preparing to block U.S. users from accessing the app entirely if a federal ban takes effect this Sunday. According to Reuters, users attempting to open the app will see a pop-up message explaining the ban and directing them to a website with more information.

The company also plans to let users download their personal data, including videos and account information, before access is cut off. This goes beyond what the law mandates, as the ban would typically prevent new downloads or updates while allowing existing users to keep using the app until it loses functionality as time progresses.

The shutdown plan reflects TikTok’s response to national security concerns raised by U.S. officials over its ties to Chinese parent company ByteDance. With the Supreme Court expected to rule soon, TikTok users in the U.S. should prepare for the app to go dark by downloading their data and exploring alternative platforms.
